Update From The City Manager Regarding Our Streets & Roads

From Mike Mallis, City Manager

Investing in the City’s infrastructure is critical as we look to the future.  It was one of the main topics identified during the tax increase campaign.  The last time the City of Bedford had a “road program” (when capital funds were invested on a yearly basis) was in 2007, over a decade ago.  As we move forward, we will be investing $400,000.00 annually for road improvements.  Currently we are reviewing the City’s 5-year capital improvement plan and will begin implementation this year.

Some of the roadways that have issues in Bedford are County and State owned, which in the past they have maintained.  With these agencies also feeling the budget crunch, they have drastically cut back on their capital improvements.  Union Street was originally earmarked to be resurfaced in 2014 by the county, obviously that hasn’t taken place and we are currently looking at funding sources to address the much needed repairs to that road.

We are constantly looking at ways to improve the City’s infrastructure.  We will be performing a road program beginning in 2018 and will continue to apply for grants and other revenue sources to assist with the needed repairs. We will also continue to pressure the other government agencies who are responsible for these roads to make the needed repairs.

Thank you.
